In a bid to promote sustainable tourism, the Himachal Roads Transport Corporation (HRTC) will be running electric buses on Manali-Rohtang-Atal tunnel-Manali route. Reports have it that, as of now, three buses will be available on the said route. More such buses will be introduced on the route as the demand rises in the next few days.
Reportedly, visitors will be charged INR 600 for a seat for a both way journey from Manali bus stand.
Referring to this, DK Narang, HRTC Regional Manager at Kullu, stated that the electric buses will start their journey from Manali in the morning and take tourists to Rohtang pass via Kothi, Gulaba and Marhi. The buses will stop at Rohtang so that tourists can enjoy the snow. Then, it will go to Koksar in Lahaul valley before returning to Manali via Atal tunnel.
He elaborated that those travelling to Manali in HRTC Volvo buses are being informed about the electric bus service by the bus staff. He added that the buses, once charged in Manali, will be able to make the journey back to the depot to get recharged while using regenerative braking.
Also, a permit is required to visit Rohtang Pass for private vehicles, which is booked online and is not easily available during the summer season. However, those opting for electric buses, will not need to seek a permit.
