Taking cue, the Indian government has asked all the states and Union Territories of India to be cautious of passengers arriving from Botswana, South Africa and Hong Kong. It also applies to travellers passing through any of these destinations. Cases of the new COVID variant have been detected in all the three places.
IANS Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan also wrote a letter to the states, stating that "“It has now been reported by NCDC that multiple cases of a Covid-19 variant — 8.1.1529 — have been reported in Botswana (three), South Africa (six) and Hong Kong (one). This variant is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations, and thus has serious public health implications for the country in view of the recently relaxed visa restrictions and opening up of international travel."
It has to be noted that the three places are in the 'at risk' category of India currently; passengers from these countries would be tested and rigorously screened, stringent contact tracing would also be done for them, as advised by the Health Ministry. Administrative authorities have also been asked to send any positive samples to the designated ISDLs.
