Preparations underway to start cheetah tourism in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Here’s an update on the re-introduced cheetahs in India – the Madhya Pradesh government is hopeful that very soon, cheetah tourism may become a reality. As per a statement from chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, by February, Madhya Pradesh may start the much-awaited cheetah tourism.

This also means that for the first time in more than 75 years, we will be able to see cheetahs in the wild, in their natural habitat.

Speaking on the matter, the chief minister shared: “There is a lot of excitement around the cheetahs. They are in good health and have adapted very well to Indian conditions. They are already hunting. If all goes well, we believe it can be opened up in February. Our preparations are on.”



After the cheetahs were translocated to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh three months ago on September 17, they spent some time in quarantine. Slowly, under the watchful eyes of the project’s experts, the cheetahs were released into bigger enclosures. Now that they have started to hunt too, naturally, the next step would be to finally release them into the wild.


Once the cheetahs are released into the wild, visitors will be allowed to experience cheetah tourism for the first time in India. The state government has shared that their plan is also to bring the local tribal villages and their culture and traditions into limelight. And this they are planning to achieve by means of homestays. For this, some of the tribal homes will offer homestays too.
