19 beaches in Goa under the threat of erosion

As per Goa's Department of Water Resources statistics, 19 Goan beaches face the threat of erosion. Also, looking at it as a threat to the tourism sector, experts opine that there's a need for immediate intervention. Both short-term and long-term plans are required to protect the Goan coastline. Anjuna, Keri-Tiracol, Morjim, Agonda, Betalbatim and Majorda are some of the top beaches in Goa that are facing this threat.
Preventive measures such as construction of protective walls, using tetra pods and geo-fibre barriers to strengthen and save the affected areas, are being taken by the authorities. However, the situation remains dire, given the fact that some of the major contributors to this type of beach erosion are global warming and an overwhelming number of visitors. The carrying capacity of the Goan coastline is something to be looked into in order to tackle this kind of beach erosion. The construction of the new airport at Mopa in North Goa, hints at even more number of visitors in the near future.

According to studies conducted by environmentalists, these affected areas need to undergo regeneration plans. From beach ecosystems to sand dunes, there is a need for corrective measures to be taken in order to save these beaches. There is a constant rise in the sea level due to global warming. This could lead to losing part of beaches that support economic activities.
Beach fauna, and the sand dunes, also known as inland dunes, serve as a protective barrier against cyclones and also help stabilise the beaches. The Goan government, along with environmental experts are looking into corrective measures to help combat the situation.
