In Soho, a network of restaurants, clubs, theatres, as well as residences are using these specialised spray-on chemical to disinfect the walls, which are actually powerful “surface protection” that provides a clear water-repellent barrier and, when hit, it sprays back urine, much to the shock of the violators
If reports are to go by, the Westminster City Council took the idea after it was previously used by another local authority in Germany.
To make people aware, contractors have even started erecting specific signs at targeted sites saying that the walls have been sprayed, and also displayed the message: "This wall is not a urinal."
Reportedly, Westminster spends nearly US$1.24 million annually for cleaning the streets, which also includes hosing down peed-on side streets. The authorities are hoping that this new strategy will not only knock civic sense in people, but will also help lower that bill.
