Vredefort: The crater’s that’s a natural wonder in South Africa

This town is renowned for one of the world's most intriguing geological formations, namely the Vredefort Dome. Set some 120 km from Johannesburg, this dome is a part of a larger meteorite impact structure. This grand impact structure today stands as a living example of the power of the universe.

The formation

A catastrophic event took place around two billion years ago in the region where South Africa stands today. A massive asteroid of about 10 km in diameter collided with earth at a godly speed. This cosmic unison formed the Vredefort Dome. The impact is considered apocalyptic as the energy released was equivalent to billions of atomic bombs!
This caused the asteroid and a significant portion of Earth's crust to vaporise instantly and left a massive crater with a diameter of roughly 300 km here. Apparently, Vredefort is the largest known impact structure on Earth.

Today, the dome and the region around it is a geological wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
