Across the country, many people joined PM
Narendra Modi’s ‘
9pm-9mins
’ call to lit up candles or lamps and show solidarity during the global crisis. A number of Bengali TV celebs came forward and lit up candles/diyaa to show solidarity.
Notably, when PM Modi urged the citizens to join the initiative, he had urged everyone not to gather in the streets or any other place but switch off the lights and lit up a candle or diya, flash mobile or torch. But in a number of places, people reportedly gathered and burst crackers.
Celebs strongly reacted to such ‘overenthusiastic’ incidents of such people defying social distancing during the
lockdown
period and bursting crackers. Actress
Juhi Sen
said, “I don’t have any political inclination. I lit up candles following our PM’s call since I believe we all should show our unity and fight together during the crisis. But I was amazed to see some people actually burst crackers!”
The recent incident has raised many questions, including the threat of community spread, pollution and others. Juhi said, “Due to almost no cars on the road, the pollution was less. Now that we went overboard and burst crackers we, ourselves, have again harmed nature once again. We forgot this is not the time to celebrate. It is time to be responsible and fight against a virus. Why can’t we act sensibly? It was all about solidarity, none asked them to burst crackers. The gatherings will again tip off the chances of community spread.” The actress also shared how the noise pollution can affect senior citizens and ailing people.
Just like, Juhi, actor Jeetu Kamal, Soumi Paul, Prriyam Chokrobarty reacted to such incidents. Prriyam, who joined the initiative and lit up a candle, was left disheartened when she saw many people bursting crackers. She took to his social media handle and wrote, “I don’t know whether we have to fight with any other disease, but I am sure we need to fight much harder to wake up our consciousness.”
Actress Soumi Paul too took to her social media handle and wrote “Today I have realised that people have stocked crackers just like they have kept rice and daal. I am frightened.”
Meanwhile, a number of popular celebs like Didi No. host
Rachna Banerjee, actors
Sougata Bandyopadhyay
,
Mimi Dutta,
Om Sahani, Liza Sarkar joined the ‘9pm-9 mins’ call.
