Eminent director Tarun Majumdar’s demise at the age of 91, has left cine lovers deeply sad. He breathed his last today (July 4). He had been admitted to the hospital since June 14. The demise of the legendary filmmaker, who won 4 National awards, has left the entertainment industry and his numerous admirers across the world deeply shattered. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her deepest condolences.

Addressing the media, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee said, “This is a huge loss for all of us. Not many people are aware that I made my debut in his film when I was 7 years old. He is one of the finest filmmakers of Indian film and a great human being.” Actress Deboshree Roy, who considered the eminent director as her father, is taken aback by the news. She broke down while talking to the media. She said, “I can’t express what I am going through. He is like my father who created me. Even my name was given by him. I considered him as my father and Sandhya Di as mother,” she said.

Rituparna Sengupta also got emotional while talking to the media. She shared how privileged she is to get the opportunity to work with the legendary filmmaker. She told the media, “It is a great loss for not only the Bengali film industry but also for Indian cinema. He was a legend and I consider myself privileged to get the opportunity to work with him.”

Artists Joyjit Banerjee, Shruti Das, Bhaswar Chatterjee and many others have expressed grief.

Known for his creative brilliance, Tarun Majumdar made his directorial debut alongside Sachin Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji with the movie Chaowa Pawa. The movie starring Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar as the leads premiered in 1959. He is one of those rare filmmakers who received a National award 4 times. In 1962, Bengali film Kancher Swarga fetched him National Award for the first time. Nimantran won the National Award for Best Bengali Feature Film in 1972 and Ganadevata received the National Award under ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ in 1979. Aranya Amar won the National Film Award for Best Scientific Film in 1984. Besides this he was honoured with many other awards. ‘Palatak’, ‘Dadar Keerti’, ‘Sangar Seemante’, ‘Phuleshwari’ are some of his films.
