Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, stars of The Office and co-hosts of the re-watch podcast Office Ladies, are taking fans behind the scenes of a pivotal Season 1 episode, “Hot Girl.” During their latest podcast episode on December 18, the duo shared fresh insights into Amy Adams’s memorable guest appearance as Katy, the “Hot Girl,” and how the future Oscar-nominated actress almost didn’t land the role.
“Hot Girl,” the Season 1 finale that first aired in 2005, centers on Katy’s visit to the Dunder Mifflin office to sell knock-off handbags. Her arrival causes a stir among the male employees, who hilariously vie for her attention. While Adams ultimately nailed the role, Fischer revealed on the podcast that she wasn’t the first actress cast as Katy.
“We originally shot ‘Hot Girl’ for an entire day with a completely different actress in the role of Katy,” Fischer shared. “Unfortunately, she just wasn’t quite right for the role, and they had to let her go. We replaced her with Amy.” This revelation marks the first time Fischer and Kinsey have disclosed that another actress had been cast before Adams stepped in.
Fischer and Kinsey also touched on the unexpected obstacle Adams faced during the casting process. “What we didn’t share before was that Amy Adams was not the first person cast in the role,” Fischer said. “And one reason she almost didn’t get the part was because the casting team thought she looked too similar to me.” Fortunately, Adams won over the creative team, including Hot Girl writer and Office star Mindy Kaling, who had wanted Adams for the role from the beginning.
Once on set, Adams brought Katy to life with ease. “I remember when Amy came on the set, she was so seamlessly Katy,” Kinsey said. “She improvises a lot, you guys. We’ll get to it. But a lot of her improvs made it in. She just knew who this woman was.”
This isn’t the first time Fischer and Kinsey have revisited “Hot Girl”; they previously discussed the episode in 2019. However, the pair’s latest commentary focuses on the extended Superfan version of the episode, currently streaming on Peacock. These extended episodes include additional scenes and moments that didn’t make the original broadcast, giving fans a richer look at the show’s early days.
Adams’s appearance in The Office marked a significant moment in her career. Just one year earlier, she had earned her first Oscar nomination for Junebug, and her time as Katy would become a beloved part of her filmography. As Fischer and Kinsey continue their journey through The Office episodes, their behind-the-scenes stories provide fans with an even deeper appreciation for the show and its unforgettable cast of characters. And for Adams, her brief stint as the “Hot Girl” was just one of many standout performances on her way to becoming a Hollywood powerhouse.
