Renowned South African actor Darlington Michaels passes away at 78

Renowned South African actor Darlington Michaels, celebrated for his role as Georgie "Papa G" Zamdela in Isidingo, has passed away. The beloved actor died on Friday, September 13, at the age of 78 after a brief illness. Darlington, who gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the gangster from the mining town, joined Isidingo in 1997 and credited the role with transforming his life.

For almost twenty years, Darlington Michaels captivated audiences with his character's unique style, which featured speaking Tsotsitaal, a South African street dialect, and sporting silk shirts with bold prints, complemented by fistfuls of chunky gold rings.

His portrayal was a standout element of the show, earning him a dedicated fan base that loved Papa G's sharp wit, humor, and clever demeanor.

The announcement of his passing has deeply saddened South African TV enthusiasts, as he was regarded as one of the country’s most iconic television villains.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over Darlington Michaels' passing. The statement read: "The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Michaels family, friends and fans."

After a difficult break due to a stroke in 2013, which led him to withdraw from the public eye to concentrate on his health, Darlington Michaels made a remarkable comeback to television in 2020. He appeared as Gap in Mzansi Magic's drama series Vula Vala. Michaels expressed his happiness at returning to the small screen and continuing his passion for acting after a setback that nearly ended his career.
