Deekshha Sonalkar Tham on Ganesh Chaturthi: Ganpati in my family is a 90-year-old tradition
Actress Deekshha Sonalkar Tham, who was last seen in show Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye has a very special bond with the Ganpati festival, and her family has been celebrating it for generations. Talking about the tradition, she says, “Ganpati is one of the oldest festivals celebrated in my family. This year marks the 90th year that the Sonalkar Ganpati has come home. Ours is a Gauri Ganpati, which means that the number of days changes with the date on the calendar. This year the visarjan will happen on the 7th day.”
Deeksha, who was born and raised in Mumbai, has seen the festival evolve over the years. She adds, “From quiet family Ganpatis to every household bringing the idol home, the number of people celebrating has definitely increased, which is so wholesome to see.”
For her, the food during the festival also plays a big role in the celebration. With a smile, she shares, “As I am a Maharashtrian, we have specific food that we make during this time. All the food is made by my grandmother. My favourites are Ukdiche Modak, Besan ka Laddoo, and Alu chi Wadi.”
The actress also loves how Ganpati changes the entire spirit of Mumbai. She says, “Yes, it brings about a positive vibe over the entire city and I love the energy that people have during this time. It’s infectious.”
When asked how the younger generation can be encouraged to keep the tradition alive, Deeksha explains, “They are growing up seeing the essence of the festival and I would hope that it touches a chord with them to encourage them to continue.”
While many people add modern twists to their celebrations, Deeksha believes in keeping things traditional. She says firmly, “Our family Ganpati celebration has been the same for the past 90 years and so has our Ganpati murti. I would like to keep it going the same way without adding any twist.”
As for her wish from Bappa, she says softly, “To make the world a kinder place. I hope there is no more war, no more inhumane decisions, and no more destruction. I genuinely want the world to be a happier place, and I also wish good health upon my loved ones.”
