Exclusive - Papia Sengupta on evolving with the craft: As someone who has been in the industry for a while, I can say that every phase comes with new challenges
Actress Papia Sengupta, who is currently seen as Kanchan Chotwani in Jamai No. 1, says that the landscape of the entertainment industry is continuously changing. She adds that this also reflects on the nature of struggle in an actor’s life, and the way projects are being made today."The nature of struggle changes, but it never fully disappears. As someone who has been in the industry for a while, I can say that every phase comes with new tests, whether it’s about adapting to new formats, staying emotionally connected to your craft, or keeping up with evolving trends,” she says. For Papia, acting is a continual process of growth and self-reflection. "Acting is never a comfort zone. Each role demands a new lens. Even a short appearance or cameo needs preparation. You carry the weight of audience expectations and your own standard of truthfulness. That kind of pressure doesn’t allow it to ever be ‘easy’,” she says. When asked about staying creatively inspired, she adds, "Inspiration comes from observing life closely. I read books, sometimes even watch my old performances to reflect as well as I love watching new web series or movies.
What helps most is staying curious and never thinking I’ve learned everything. Each day on set is a lesson in itself."The actress also values the exchange that occurs between artists and their audiences. "Audience feedback can be enlightening. It shows what people are connecting with emotionally. If there's room to adjust certain nuances without compromising the character, I do take those thoughts seriously. Art is a dialogue, not a monologue,” she says. With richer roles being written for women across ages, Papia feels the industry is finally embracing nuance and complexity. "It’s truly an expansive time for storytelling. There’s no longer one type of heroine or one type of mother. Characters are layered, age is no barrier, and depth is celebrated. That gives actors like me the space to thrive and contribute meaningfully."
