Reacting to the news of Shefali's sudden demise, Poonawalla said, "I am deeply shocked to hear about the passing away of my friend Shefali Jariwala. I remember meeting her last at a party. She was happy and healthy. The news is disheartening."

He continued to address the issue of cardiac arrest. He added, "As a nation we have suffered the highest rates of heart attacks and cardiac arrests in the world over 50% and half of these occur In youngsters below the age of 45. I have been raising the issue of a cardiac arrest pandemic in India and every Indian middle class family is one hospitalisation away from bankruptcy."
