Esha Kansara, who was last seen in Maddam Sir, spoke to ETimes TV about her initial days in showbiz, insecurities she faced as an actor and much more. In this week’s Tellyblazer segment, Esha Kansara, who made her debut in the telly industry with the show Mukti Bandhan, recalled being over confident about work and thinking that she would get work easily. The actress shared how she overcame those struggles, facing insecurities in life as an actor, doing intimate scenes and more.
Posts wrapping up Maddam Sir, what kind of roles are you looking forward to playing?I just want to choose something now that is like my role in Maddam Sir – Misri Pandey or roles that are completely out of my comfort zone. As an actor, you want to climb the ladder and acting everyday is like practice. I wouldn’t mind doing OTT, film or even a good TV show. I am someone who takes up interesting things although I do have an agenda of where to reach as an actor. But also, I would have to see that I don’t sit at home for too long. For an actor, it is not very fruitful.
When a character gets shelved untimely, how do you handle the insecurities? The whole industry is insecure. You don’t know what is going to happen. There’s also an adrenaline rush after an audition about what’s going to happen. When it comes to characters being short lived – Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana ran for almost 11 months but we knew it is going to go off-air within some time. It wasn’t a shock for us. We were happy to let it go. We wrapped up the shoot with grace. We can only look for another job when the present job is over. There are insecurities. But I am grateful for the life I have made for myself. When we sit at home, that is also practice for an actor – you watch different stuff, you watch something new, you try new activities – which you can incorporate in your acting career.
Have you taken up a project because of financial security and nothing fruitful coming your way for a long time?Yes, we have. Hope, faith and confidence in your talent will always be with you. Before Maddam Sir, I was sitting at home for a good two months. I took up interior decoration. I started renovating my house. I feel we have glorified over working so much, after lockdown I think it has made everyone realise that work is not the only thing that should make you happy. There has to be other things in your life also. When you are at home, we should utilize the stay. All these things are a part and parcel of life. We have insecurities and at times it gets over in two days.
Being in the industry for so long, did you ever go through a low phase in your life? That was long back during Mukti Bandhan. After that show, I was in a phase where I thought ‘ab toh kaam mil hi jayega’. I was over confident during that point of time. I thought ‘ek show kar liya ab toh line lag jayegi’. But it doesn’t work like that. You have to work hard to look for work every day. I think there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Even big actors, Hollywood actors, look for work, good scripts. So I was a bit over confident at that time and not looking for work. I thought work would come to me. I had taken up plays meanwhile. Slowly, I started looking for work and I practice that to this day as well.
How did you learn to project yourself and be out there?I wasn’t very vocal about myself. I wouldn’t go out or meet people. I started meeting people and networking. I started talking to my friends, who gave me good ideas. I started calling people about what I am looking for. There’s no sharam in that.
As an actress do you have any personal limitations when it comes to intimate scenes? Not as of now. I don’t have problems with intimate scenes, but I do have problems with bold scenes – very bold scenes. I might not do that. Because that is just not me. But if people around me are comfortable, it is for the betterment of the script and I feel comfortable at that point of time, then I would like to try it. But I don’t want to create that image of myself because at times you get easily typecast. I am also not comfortable with too many kissing scenes and bold scenes. But I would like to romance a good actor and would want to get into that genre – rom-com, romance drama, romantic thriller – I don’t mind doing that.
