Kanwar Dhillon on performing the Ram Leela sequence in Udne Ki Aasha: Was a bit nervous about how it would look since I didn’t get time to prepare
Actor Kanwar Dhillon recently garnered immense appreciation for his portrayal of Lord Ram in the Ram Leela sequence in Udne Ki Aasha. The actor, who has explored mytho tracks earlier in shows like Pandya Store and Hum Hain Na, says this particular experience felt truly special.
“I’ve explored this side of the craft before as well… but breaking the monotony and trying something new on the same set was a great experience,” Kanwar shares, adding that the change in costumes, dialogues and performance tone brought a refreshing shift. “Exploring different shades as an actor always gives me joy,” he says.
Talking about the unique challenge mythological portions bring, he explains, “You have to speak pure Hindi and even a few Urdu words sometimes, which is not part of our everyday lingo. Suddenly you receive a very different script and it can throw you off.” However, his command over the language helped him adapt quickly.
The audience response, he admits, has been overwhelming. “People even called me a ‘handsome Ram’, which really touched me,” Kanwar smiles. Interestingly, he hasn’t yet watched the episodes due to a packed schedule. “I was a bit nervous about how it would look since I didn’t get time to prepare, but the love coming in means a lot.”
Reflecting on the emotional core of the storyline, Kanwar highlights the family message behind the Ram Leela sequence: “No matter how flawed a family member may be, the family stands together and protects each other’s dignity. Small gestures for your loved ones can make a big difference.”
Despite having done mytho tracks earlier, Kanwar admits he still feels like a “misfit” in that space. “I was very anxious… the outfits, the dialogue delivery — I’m not naturally inclined towards mytho. But I gave it my best,” he says, revealing that he had practically no prep time. “On TV, we don’t really get space for preparation — we perform instantly.”
Praising his team for executing the sequence beautifully despite tight television timelines, he adds, “Delivering one hour of content every day itself is a task. There was no room for creative liberties, so I’m glad we could do justice to it and that the audience connected with it.”
