Kaun Banega Crorepati 17: Deepti Sharma credits her brother; says 'He saw the Cricketer in me before anyone else'
In the recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, India’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma opens up about the moment that changed her life, the person who first saw her potential and encouraged her to take up cricket - her elder brother. Speaking to Amitabh Bachchan, Deepti shared how his support and belief played a crucial role in shaping her early journey.
Recalling her childhood days, Deepti said, “I began playing cricket because of my brother. I used to accompany him to the ground just to watch him play. One day, I was sitting on the stairs when a ball suddenly came towards me. I threw it back from around 40–50 metres, and it directly hit the stumps. People there immediately said, ‘This girl should be playing cricket.’ From that moment, I never looked back and started playing seriously.”
The episode also featured a touching moment when her brother, seated in the audience, expressed his pride. He said, “I feel proud to be known as Deepti’s brother,” acknowledging how far she has come. He also recited a heartfelt poem dedicated to Amitabh Bachchan, adding warmth and charm to the episode.
Shafali Varma also opened up about how she began her journey in cricket with a zero-run innings, a moment she remembers clearly.. Speaking about her formative years, Shafali shared, “My family wasn’t financially strong, and my father first took my brother to cricket coaching. I would go along and tease him from behind, telling him the drills looked easy. One day, my father asked me to try it myself, and the first two balls I played, I hit well, and he was impressed. There were no women’s cricket academies near our home, so I started playing with boys. When my brother fell sick before a tournament, I wore his T-shirt with his name ‘Sahil’ on it and played in his place… and I ended up becoming the Player of the Tournament. That was the turning point of my life.”
Deepti’s story on KBC is a reminder of how a single moment of discovery — and the unwavering support of family — can change the course of a young athlete’s life.
