Akshara and Abhimanyu’s wedding in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has become a moment to rejoice amongst fans. More so because it was the grandest wedding seen on TV. Apart from being a magnificent celebration, #AbhiRa’s wedding sequence stole hearts with the unique representation of reversed rituals that revolutionised the way Hindu weddings are performed. Here’s how the #AbhiRa wedding broke stereotypes:

Played by Harshad Chopda, Abhimanyu’s character is known to question the stereotypical thinking every now and then in the show. And, the makers decided to not let this quality of the character be left out during the wedding sequence too. Ahead of his baraat, Abhi asked Manjuli (his mother) to perform the pagdi rasam instead of his father (Harsh). Moreover, he suggested that there shouldn’t be any discrimination between men and women when it comes to performing rituals.

After the pagdi rasam and before the baraat’s beginning, Abhi questioned why a bride is taught to change herself according to her in-laws after marriage. He suggested that his family should try to instill a few habits to adjust with the Akshu, who would be a new member. Surprisingly, the Birlas also agree with him and support him with the same.

Another surprising element in the #AbhiRa wedding sequence was the ‘joota churayi rasam’. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’s makers surely tried their best to give a twist to the conventional wedding rituals. Abhi and Akshu’s wedding witnessed an interesting exchange of duties between ladkiwalas and ladkewalas. Ahead of the wedding ceremony, the ladkewalas tricked Akshu and the ladkiwalas by taking her sandals and hiding them, completely different from how ladkiwalas do this with the groom.

The biggest and most appalling moment in the #AbhiRa wedding sequence was when Abhi questioned why only the groom gets to apply sindoor. Adding to this, he asked Akshu to apply the sindoor on his forehead, too, surprising everyone. He further alleged that he also wants to take care of Akshu like she would.

The #AbhiRa wedding witnessed another attention grabbing moment. It was the moment when Abhi and Akhshu took the pheras, which is one fo the most important part of a Hindu wedding. As they circled around the fire, Suhasini, Swarna, Manish and Manjuli explained the significance of each and every phera they took and what value it carries in terms of the promise the bride and groom make to each other.

Another eyecatching moment that the #AbhiRa wedding has witnessed is when the bride aka Akshu rode to her ‘sasural’ with Abhi seated behind her. Unlike the usually decorated car, this gen-Z bride, Akshu rode her dulha aka Abhimanyu home on a beautifully decorated bike.
