​From Ethirneechal to Pandian Stores: A look at a few longest-running Tamil Television shows​

Sometimes TV shows are only meant to last one season or two. But the popularity of a few other shows among the audience has made them last many years. The creators of these shows have managed to deliver new drama and content that help to keep their viewers entertained and glued to the TV. Ethirneechal is the most popular family drama in Tamil GEC space. The serial is continuously seen on top of the TRP charts. The show is currently progressing with Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran accepting his daughter-in-law Janani Shakthivel. The story involves Janani, a high achiever, and her three co-sisters - Eshwari, Renuka and Nandhini, who are well-educated, while all of their husbands aren't educated at all. The husbands of didn't allow their wives to get a job. In fact, they forcefully kept their wives as housekeepers. Janani marries Sakthivel, the youngest brother of the Aadhi family; he is honest and submissive in nature. Janani started to raise her voice against the male chauvinism in Gunasekaran's house. Sakthi assured his support to Janani in all situations.

Pandavar Illam is one of the longest-running Tamil soap operas. It has completed 1000 episodes already. The show premiered in July 2019. The story is all about Periya Sundaram and his five grandsons Raja Sundaram Pandavar, Nalla Sundaram Pandavar, Azhagu Sundaram Pandavar, Anbu Sundaram Pandavar, and Kutty Sundaram Pandavar. After losing their brother on the day of his wedding, this ‘only males’ family vows not to marry.

Katrukenna Veli has been winning the hearts of viewers with its gripping storyline. It has completed 800 episodes already. The daily soap Kaatrukkenna Veli is the remake of the Bengali series Mohor. The story revolves around Vennila, an undergraduate student who aspires to be an IAS officer. When her father forces her to get married after finishing school, she flees her wedding with the aid of her mother. With her former teacher Sharadha's help, she joins the Meenakshi Shivanandham College, which is owned and run by Sharadha's in-laws.

Sundari is doing well on the TRP charts and its episodes where Sundari fights against her husband is also generating a lot of interest. The serial was also a sensation among fans. The show was consistent in bagging a spot in the top 10 positions in the TRP charts. Sundari is the story of a girl, who faces discrimination for her dark skin tone, yet she fights against adversities in life. She has a kind heart but struggles to find the right man to marry. Undeterred, she strives to become an IAS officer. Her journey toward achieving her goal takes her through many ups and downs in life, and she firmly believes that inner beauty is more important than physical appearance, which forms the crux of the story.

And now the series is inching towards its 1007th episode. The story is about the close bond between Chinrasu and his sister Thulasi. Their parents died when they were young. Both were raised by their grandmother. Chinraasu is on the lookout for a perfect groom for Thulasi. However, she repeatedly rejects potential grooms as she doesn't want to leave her brother. As fate would have it, she falls in love with Chinrasu's nemesis, the Panchayat board officer.

Maari is one of the supernatural thriller soaps which got a huge Tamil TV audience. The serial stars Ashika Padukone, Adarsh, Sona Heiden, Shiva Subramanian, Abitha, and Delhi Ganesh in the lead roles. The story is about Maari, a simple girl who comes from a small town. And the innocent girl experiences the boon and bane of her power of premonition. She goes on to marry Surya under unusual circumstances and turns out to be his savior.

Pandian Stores is a story about the unity of four brothers. Dhanalakshmi (played by Sujitha Dhanush) gets married to the elder brother, Sathyamoorthy (portrayed by Stalin Muthu). The show was launched in 2018 and has been consistent in TRP chart performance, despite the frequent changes in the cast.
