With kids quarantined in the US and husband working during lockdown, this will be my quietest Ugadi: Actress Kasthuri Shankar

Ugadi 2020 is certainly different and actress Kasthuri Shankar, who has made her Telugu debut recently, is witnessing the change. Amid Covid-19 spread and the 21-day lockdown announced by PM Narendra Modi on March 24 night, the actress spoke to ETimes TV about her Ugadi plans, thoughts on the pandemic and how the country is uniting to fight against the virus.

This will be the quietest Ugadi

I’m married into a Telugu family and we do celebrate Ugadi as ceremoniously. But my kids are in the US and I’m staying alone here in Chennai. So, it will be the quietest Ugadi for all of us.

My kids are under lockdown; my physician husband is working relentlessly

My kids are in the US. They have been lockdown from the past 15 days and are safe. I’m regularly in touch with them. But my husband is a physician. He can’t work from home. He’s on the frontline working relentlessly. I’m proud of him. He’s making a difference right now.

Homemakers have to pull more weight now

Homemakers can get some time for themselves when the men go to the office and kids are in school. But they have to pull more weight in a crisis situation like this. Now they have to take more and do more. Men have to at least appreciate what they do.

I keep myself occupied

Staying home isn’t easy. We need to be extra focused to be sane. With the lockdown, I’ve got some precious me-time. I have a fixed work schedule - 7 am to 10 pm and I try to plan and schedule all my household chores and professional work.

Work from home will be the norm

When World War II came, people’s dress code changed. This is a war against a virus, things will change. We’ll get used to. I think working from home will become a norm if this is successful. This is an observation from my friends working from home; they are doing really well already. They are meticulously working and being very productive. This is in a way being beneficial to productivity. People are now able to balance family demands.

Janta Curfew was a masterstroke

I’m proud of what my state and country are doing right now. We may say it is late; it is not easy in a country like India with 1.3b population. Janta Curfew was a masterstroke, everybody realised that something is going wrong.

Homeless and migrant workers are worse hit

Government has to start ramping up aid packages for the poor and homeless. They are going to be worse hit right now. Financial aid and rescue packages have to be announced.

In any crisis, there will be people who are most affected

In any crisis, there will be a marginal section who is most affected. There will be people with special needs. I take care of 60 kids who are battling cancer. Medical facilities have been diverted from them. But we understand and are trying to cope up with it. Some parents have lost their daily breed. We all have to look for each other. We’ll find a way.

It has taken a virus to remind us that we are human

It has taken a virus that doesn’t make any distinction between class, creed, community and race to remind that we are human and we have to look for each other. This is tragic. This may be nature’s way of culling the overgrown population. We had so many alerts in the past but man keeps surviving. Hopefully, we learn our lessons now.
