The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to support the day-long strike on August 7 called for by the Motor Vehicles Federation. The strike is being held against the retrograde provisions of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill as well as the steady but problematic rise in the price of petroleum products. If the Bill is passed by Parliament, it will allow for private players to enter the public transport field in a big way. The Bill also takes away some the autonomy that public transport companies had in the system, like the fact that it would become compulsory t o get repair and servicing done only in company centers, thus taking away the livelihoods of thousands of roadside mechanics. The CPM Politburo says the demands raised by the All-India Co-Ordination Committee of Road Transport Workers Organisation are genuine and urged the government to realize the inconvenience that will be caused by the strike.
