Huranga Holi: women tear off men's clothes, beat them with sticks in Vrindavan

The festival of colours is celebrated throughout the country, but Holi in the Braj region is distinguished by merriment and vivacity not found in other parts of the country. During the 40-day Holi festival to be held in Brij, the celebration of Huranga was completed in Baldev, the city of King Baldau of Brij. Here, a strange ritual takes place during the Huranga festival. Following the morning darshan, the devotees from Baldev and neighbouring villages congregate in the temple courtyard. The temple compound becomes a battleground in the two hours that follow. Men pour buckets of saffron-colored water on women, who retaliate by ripping off their shirts and thrashing them with it.
