Megastar Amitabh Bachchan and late actor Amjad Khan might have essayed the role of enemies in reel life, but in real life, the two shared a great bond. But do you know their friendship was to such an extent that once when Amjad Khan got critically injured, it was our very own Big B who came to his rescue? Yes! You read that right. Recently, we stumbled upon an old interview of Amjad Khan's wife Shehla Khan, wherein she recalled how Amitabh Bachchan signed hospital documents ahead of Amjad Khan’s surgery after he met with an accident. In a conversation with an entertainment portal, Shehla Khan recalled the whole incident and revealed that ahead of the shooting of the film 'The Great Gambler' in 1979, Amjad Khan met with a serious accident at Sawantwadi, near Goa, when she herself was 6 months pregnant. Amjad was gasping for breath and also had internal bleeding as 13 of his ribs and femur bone got broken. Shehla further revealed that Amjad immediately needed surgery that was known as tracheostomy (a surgical procedure to ease breathing). And, Amitabh had then given his signature in hospital documents for the doctors to perform a tracheostomy on Amjad. She said, 'A mob had gathered outside the hospital in Sawantwadi. 'Gabbar Singh ko bahar lao (Bring Gabbar Singh outside)' they kept saying. The doctors sent us to Panjim or else the crowd would have pulled down the hospital. He had to be operated on in Goa and that’s when Amitji (Bachchan) gave his signature for the doctors to proceed with the tracheostomy (a surgical procedure to ease breathing). She further added, 'Amjad and Amitji shared a close bond. Amitji must have been nervous because no one knew whether the man was going to make it or not. He was surprised when Amjad wrote down the term ‘tracheostomy’ on a piece of paper, gesturing to Amitji if he would be undergoing it. In fact, even in that condition, he spelled the complicated word correctly. Soon, we chartered a flight to Mumbai. We stayed in Nanavati Hospital for three months.' Amjad Khan passed away in the year 1992. For more news and updates, stay tuned to ETimes.
