The Congress has sharply attacked the Gita Press in the wake of the Centre’s decision to confer on it the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021. In a tweet, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that awarding Gita Press is like awarding Nathuram Godse, the man who had killed Gandhi. The BJP hit back at the Congress, calling its criticism of Gita Press, a sign of its anti-Hindu mindset. The Congress’s decision to stridently criticise Gita Press is also questionable from the point of electoral politics. The party that hopes to return to power at the Centre in 2024 cannot be seen as attacking institutions that are held dear by crores of Hindus. Plus, Gita Press was never directly responsible for any communal politics.
