The value of a woman’s work at home was no less than that of her office-going husband, the Supreme Court said on January 5. And the court enhanced the compensation to relatives of a couple who died in an accident in April 2014 in Delhi on the basis of the contribution of the homemaker. The Supreme Court also said that fixing notional income for the homemakers was also a step towards social equality, dignity. A recent report of the National Statistical Office titled ‘Time Use in India-2019’ suggested that, on an average, women spend nearly 299 minutes a day on unpaid domestic services for household members against 97 minutes by men. Times of India spoke to people in general to find out as to what they thought about the Supreme Court statement. The reactions were varied and mixed. Many women described themselves not as just housewives, but as home managers. Many men were happy that the Supreme Court had equated the selfless work of the housewives to that of their office going husbands, while some expressed that making comparison between the two was not just the right approach and some were even not aware of the Supreme Court statement.
