Jeffrey Nickerson is a Professor in the School of Business at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. His areas of research include the future of work, digital innovation, and information systems. Recently he has been studying how AI interacts with journalism and other professions; and has co-developed and unveiled a new tool that can help reporters find more interesting angles and relevant context in the information they receive. Researchers from Columbia and Syracuse universities collaborated directly with Nickerson in a project funded by the National Science Foundation to understand how AI can be used to extract relevant concepts from press releases, suggest new lines of inquiry, questions and potential hot-button issues, and provide both historical context and further reading.Here Nickerson stresses that the AI tool he helped develop is not making editorial decisions and that sometimes the some of the results it generates is not true while other times it can come back with material that is very useful, makes a lot of sense, and it's done in a fraction of a second. In working with journalists to use the tool, Nickerson found they were not interested in AI writing their stories or copy, journalists thought they could write better stories. However, journalists were very interested in AI's ability to suggest different angles to a story based on a press release and believe that can save them time.Nickerson comments that because of AI, layoffs have begun in the field of journalism in jobs like copy editors and illustrators. Conversely, he says AI might lead to more news in local markets. He gives an example of local planning board meetings which are rarely covered but could be going forward if a productive journalist could quickly use transcripts of a meeting and their own experience to write a story.
