Iran is executing a detailed plan devised by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after the June 2025 12-day war designed to sow chaos across the Middle East, disrupt global energy markets and pressure the US and Israel to halt their campaign. The Financial Times reports Khamenei expected to be killed and stayed in his compound as a martyr, having already put measures in place for the regime to continue escalating after his death. The plan has included strikes on Qatar's gas facilities, Saudi Arabia's biggest refinery, hotels and airports across the Gulf, and drone and missile barrages at US bases from Bahrain to Iraq.
