In a stunning pivot, the Trump administration has greenlit buying certain Russian oil products at sea, handing Vladimir Putin, an ally of Iran, a cash lifeline as the US-Israel-Iran war sends global energy into freefall. The “temporary authorisation” was announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on March 13, who emphasised that the waiver targets oil already in transit at sea.The announcement came on the same day as Brent crude prices blasted past $100 per barrel for the first time since August 2022 as the war with Iran drags on.
