Italy has taken a major step amid growing global criticism of Israel’s military actions in the Middle East. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the suspension of the automatic renewal of Italy’s defence agreement with Israel, signalling a tougher stance from a key Western ally. The move comes as tensions remain high following the US-Israel conflict with Iran and continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Italy had already halted arms sales to Israel in 2024, but this latest decision marks a deeper shift in policy. Meanwhile, voices across Europe are growing louder, with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez accusing Israel of violating international law. As the conflict expands, pressure on Israel from its allies appears to be intensifying.
