Letters to Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez found in Mexico
A set of 150 letters addressed to Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez was recently discovered by one of his granddaughters in Mexico City. They include letters by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Cuban Leader Fidel Castro, and Zapatista spokesperson Marcos, among others. The one most precious to Gonzalo García Barcha, García Márquez's son, is a handwritten 'happy birthday' note by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, another Latin American Nobel recipient. He said it might have cheered his parents, especially his father 'Gabo,' who spent days reading Neruda's works. Emilia García Elizondo, Director of House of Literature Gabriel García Márquez Foundation and the writer's granddaughter, said the discovery happened as they were searching for a photo to commemorate the 40th anniversary of García Márquez winning the Nobel Prize. A box with a tag marked as "grandchildren" was stored in a corner. Forty of these letters will be on display in the family house in Mexico City to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the author winning the Nobel. The exhibition is set to open on June 16.
