South China Sea Tensions Surge As China Launches 'Major Operation' Near Taiwan | Watch
Is the Chinese invasion of Taiwan imminent? Beijing's ministry of transport on Saturday announced what it calls a "special maritime traffic law enforcement operation" in waters east of Taiwan, a move that is drawing attention amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the broader South China Sea region. According to a statement carried by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the operation involves multiple maritime agencies, including the Fujian and Guangdong Maritime Safety Administrations, and is aimed at strengthening deep-sea patrols, improving traffic control, ensuring maritime safety, and safeguarding China's claimed rights and interests. Beijing said the operation was also a response to plans by Japan and the Philippines to begin maritime boundary delimitation negotiations in waters east of Taiwan, which China says infringe upon its sovereignty and maritime claims.
