The secrets behind the costumes of Ukraine's Eurovision champions
As the UK city of Liverpool prepares to host Eurovision Song Contest, all eyes are on the music competition which celebrates a love of the tacky, the kitsch, the traditional and the downright bizarre. Last year saw a particularly sentimental win, with the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra scoring highest in the contest with their song "Stefania." Their costume designer, Roksolyana Shymchuk's, explains why the award meant so much for the country and also for traditional Ukrainian costumes. Lead singer, Oleg Psyuk, last year wore an ancient Bukovyna keptar, a traditional beaded waistcoat that's around a hundred years old. It was taken from Roksolyana's own collection. Roksolyana a collector of traditional Ukrainian clothing, says Eurovision stylists and Kalush Orchestra set her a difficult task: To combine rap with Ukrainian authenticity. Oleg 's trademark pink hat was off limits. Liverpool will host the Grand Final of Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 13 May.
