Matthew DeVerna is a Ph.D. student at Indiana University studying informatics. DeVerna states the Top FIBers Dashboard is a publicly available website that tracks the top super spreaders of low credibility content on Twitter and Facebook each month. So far, the Observatory on Social Media at Indiana University has found the top spreaders of misinformation tend to be users who speak on political topics. Many prominent political pundits are top spreaders of misinformation. But what is most concerning is the evidence the Observatory has found that suggests Twitter might be intentionally overlooking more prominent spreaders of misinformation. This is why the Observatory wanted to make this information public and raise awareness about the problem of misinformation super spreaders. He says combating misinformation on social media platforms can be done more efficiently. Some of the results the Observatory on Social Media found indicate that ten Twitter accounts were responsible for spreading 35% of the misinformation the Observatory found over an eight month period. Focusing a platform’s resources on just these ten accounts would be more effective and require fewer resources. What the Observatory learned about Twitter suggests the platform is overlooking some of the most prominent super spreaders. There may need to be outside pressure to address the problem of misinformation super spreaders. One of the goals of the Top FIBers Dashboard is to raise awareness of this issue and encourage platforms and regulators to think about addressing this issue more directly. DeVerna claims in the future, the Observatory on Social Media wants to show some sort of quantitative modeling evidence to suggest good targeting strategies. It would be more efficient to target the most problematic accounts. This could also be a win-win scenario for the public as well since focusing on the biggest spreaders of misinformation would allow platforms to reduce the amount of content moderation necessary.
