Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday pushed back against the Opposition’s demand for an immediate debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He emphasized that while the government is open to discussions, it will not operate under fixed timelines. The remarks came after Opposition parties staged a walkout in Rajya Sabha, urging urgent deliberation on SIR, with TMC’s Derek O’Brien claiming “people are dying because of SIR.” Rijiju clarified that the scheduled discussion on ‘Vande Mataram’ would take precedence due to its historical importance. He stressed that Parliament must function through dialogue and debate, and accused the Opposition of venting frustration over electoral defeats rather than constructive discussion.
