Amid the ongoing violence in West Bengal in the wake of panchayat elections, Union Minister Anurag Thakur on July 08 condemned the killings of civilians and said that under Mamata Banerjee's government, ballot boxes are looted and democracy is crushed and killed. The Information and Broadcasting Minister also raised questions over the silence of Congress’ Rahul Gandhi and party President Mallikarjun Kharge. Speaking to ANI, “The announcement of elections in West Bengal means the beginning of the murder of democracy. Fighting with people, firing, bombings, and arson have become a common thing and many such examples have been seen more than once. Under Mamata Banerjee's government, ballot boxes are looted and democracy is crushed and killed. Mamata Banerjee and TMC leaders do the work of stooping to any level to win the elections. But, Congress and Rahul Gandhi remain silent. Congress wants to form an alliance with Mamata Banerjee.”West Bengal has 3,341 gram panchayats and the number of village panchayat election centres is 58,594. There are 63,239 seats at the Gram Panchayat level, 9730 at Panchayat Samiti and 928 at the Zila Parishad level. The counting of votes will be held on July 11.
