European Union leaders have delivered a tough message to India ahead of finalising the long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA). EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has bluntly stated that India’s military ties and energy links with Russia remain “obstacles” to deeper cooperation. The New EU–India Strategic Agenda seeks stronger ties on trade, investment, technology and defence, but Brussels insists the partnership is also about “values” and “strategic choices.” With Ursula von der Leyen calling India a “reliable partner,” Europe is urging Delhi to prove its commitment.
