Navy chief admiral R Hari Kumar on Saturday said that one of the most important roles for them is to assist in times of disasters or natural calamities or evacuation. "We had our ships on mission-based deployments when the Sudan crisis happened. INS Sumedha was deployed in Red Sea but diverted to go off Port Sudan. Similarly, INS Teg was also diverted from an anti-piracy patrol," he said.
