The United States is preparing to enforce a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz targeting Iranian ports, raising concerns over disruptions to global shipping and energy supplies. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is closely tracking developments in West Asia and reiterated that dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation remain essential, while also stressing the importance of uninterrupted freedom of navigation and smooth global commerce through the strategic waterway. Officials stated that around 15 Indian-flagged vessels are currently stranded in the region, and coordinated efforts are underway to ensure their safe return. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working with the MEA to resolve the situation at the earliest. India, heavily reliant on Gulf energy imports, may face added pressure, even as its Iranian crude imports have largely remained negligible since 2019 due to sanctions.
