During the Budget Session, Lok Sabha witnessed a heated exchange after Rahul Gandhi tried quoting from the unpublished memoir of ex-Army Chief Gen MM Naravane while addressing BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s comments on Congress’s patriotism. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opposed the citation, claiming unpublished material cannot be quoted and accused Gandhi of misleading Parliament. Speaker Om Birla upheld this objection, barring the reading of such content. BJP leaders including Kiren Rijiju, Giriraj Singh, and Nishikant Dubey criticized Gandhi, citing national security and past Congress governance. In contrast, Congress MPs Shashi Tharoor, TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee, and RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha defended him, pointing out he referenced a publicly available magazine article and underscoring the need for open parliamentary debate. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also stressed the importance of discussing border security and China’s threat, highlighting the significance of raising national security issues in the House.
