Union Minister Piyush Goyal has sent an unambiguous message in India-US trade negotiations, asserting that agriculture will not be opened to American imports. Speaking on the joint trade framework, Goyal said India is fully self-sufficient in food production and will not compromise on sectors critical to farmers and rural livelihoods. Products ranging from dairy, meat and poultry to cereals, millets, oilseeds and ethanol have been excluded from import concessions. While maintaining this firm stand, the government is expanding export opportunities for Indian businesses, MSMEs, farmers and fishermen through zero-duty access on several key products. Goyal said the trade pact is designed to boost exports, create jobs for women and youth, and strengthen India’s economic position without diluting core national interests.
