A political storm has erupted after Mamata Banerjee accused the Election Commission of acting like a “Tughlaqi Commission” and functioning at the behest of a political party. The controversy centres on the Special Intensive Revision exercise in West Bengal, where 58 lakh voters were removed from draft rolls. Banerjee alleged misuse of AI by a BJP IT cell member to delete names and said the EC was targeting citizens and stripping them of democratic rights. She questioned the conduct of Indian elections by citing Bangladesh as an example of peaceful polling. Claiming that 160 people died due to stress linked to the SIR process, she promised full protection to state officials facing EC action. The remarks intensify the clash between the Bengal government and the constitutional poll authority ahead of crucial political battles.
