Ten people died after consuming spurious liquor in Viluppuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu. Six people hailing from Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district died on Sunday. In Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district, two persons died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, all caused due to illicit liquor consumption.During a press conference held on May 14, N Kannan, IG, North Zone said, “Two spurious liquor incidents have been reported in Chengalpattu & Villupuram districts. In the Vilupuram dist, 6 were hospitalised with complaints of vomiting, eye irritation, and giddiness. 4 of them died during treatment. 2 are in the Intensive Care Unit. In connection with the incident, one accused Amaran has been arrested and spurious liquor has been seized.” “In the Chengalpattu district, 5 were hospitalised. 4 of them died during treatment. An autopsy has been done. Accused Ammavasai has been arrested in connection with the Chengalpattu district incident. In both incidents, a few accused are absconding and special teams are formed to nab the accused. In both cases industries usable poison liquor has been used. 3 inspectors and 4 sub-inspectors have been suspended from both districts for not doing their duty in connection with spurious liquor,” he added.
