'Totally Unfair, Unjustified': Modi Govt's First Reaction As Trump's 50% Tariffs Kicks In
The United States has enforced a 50% tariff on Indian goods starting today, adding a second 25% duty to the earlier hike. Reacting to the move, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the tariffs are "totally unjustified and unfair." He assured that India’s strong economy and resilient industries will help the nation navigate the challenge. On PM Modi’s upcoming visit to China for the SCO Summit, Singh said, “The world is always changing… we are well-prepared to meet up with any eventuality.” The hike targets India’s continued trade with Russia and is expected to impact $48–60 billion in exports, particularly from labour-heavy sectors like textiles, seafood, and auto parts.
