On August 26, the Indian Navy will commission two stealth frigates — INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri — in Visakhapatnam, a historic first as both were built at different shipyards. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the commissioning. These advanced warships are part of Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) and are equipped for full-spectrum maritime warfare. Udaygiri, constructed by MDL, is the 100th ship designed by the Navy and the fastest delivered in her class. Himgiri, built by GRSE, is their first under the project. With 75% indigenous content and cutting-edge systems, these ships showcase India’s naval modernisation, shipbuilding synergy, and commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
