Former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris secured victories in their respective party strongholds as Americans cast their votes in a deeply consequential election.

Results remained uncertain in crucial battleground states including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and North Carolina, whilst voting continued across Nevada and western regions. The electorate added to the substantial 84 million early votes already cast.

Trump claimed Florida, which has increasingly favoured Republicans, alongside traditional Republican territories like Texas, South Carolina and Indiana. Harris meanwhile secured Democratic bastions including New York, Massachusetts and Illinois.

According to AP VoteCast's comprehensive survey of over 110,000 voters, Harris supporters prioritised democratic principles, whilst Trump's base emphasised immigration and inflation concerns. The survey revealed widespread public dissatisfaction and desire for change.

Election Day proceedings were largely orderly, with typical isolated incidents including queues, technical difficulties and printing issues with ballots.
Harris has pledged to maintain President Biden's general direction whilst seeking bipartisan solutions. Trump has outlined plans for widespread federal staff changes, extensive tariffs and large-scale deportations.

Both candidates concentrated on seven key swing states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia, which shifted from Trump to Biden between 2016 and 2020. Nevada and North Carolina also remained competitive.
Trump cast his ballot in Palm Beach, Florida, later stating "So far so good" on Wisconsin radio. Harris conducted battleground state radio interviews and visited Democratic National Committee headquarters, engaging with phone bank volunteers.

The tight race across multiple states suggested final results might not emerge on election night. Officials prepared for potential foreign interference and security threats, with bomb threats disrupting voting in parts of Georgia and Pennsylvania.

At 60, Harris would make history as the first woman and person of colour as president, while 78-year-old Trump would be the oldest president and first convicted felon to hold the office. Both candidates faced assassination attempts during the campaign.

Voters also decided numerous down-ballot races affecting Congressional control and state-level abortion access. In Florida, an abortion rights measure failed to reach the required 60% threshold for passage.
