ECI Orders 96-Hour Dry Day In Bengal, TN Ahead Of Polling; Liquor Ban Extended To Counting Day
The Election Commission of India has mandated a 96-hour “Dry Day” in poll-bound regions of West Bengal and 48 hours in Tamil Nadu ahead of assembly elections. The directive prohibits the sale, service, and distribution of liquor in polling areas during the 48 hours preceding the close of voting.Issued under Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the order applies to all licensed establishments, including hotels, clubs, and restaurants. The restriction will also be enforced during re-polls and on the counting day, May 4.The Commission has emphasised strict enforcement, including monitoring of liquor storage and action against violations under excise laws. The measure is part of efforts to prevent voter inducement and ensure a fair electoral process.
