India is struggling with a wave of seasonal flu caused by Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus. A total of 3,038 laboratory-confirmed cases of various influenza subtypes, including H3N2 were recorded in the country up until March 9.
Doctors suggest the virus is not life-threatening in normal circumstances."Admission to hospital has not been very common and only about 5 per cent cases have been reported to be hospitalized," news agency PTI quoted Tarun Sahani, senior consultant, internal medicine, Apollo Hospitals.
H3N2 virus normally circulates in pigs and then infects humans. The H3N2 virus was first detected in pigs in 2010. It was first detected in people in 2011. In the next year, the H3N2 subtype of influenza A virus outbreak was reported at several places. This year, the flu is spreading rapidly in India and the Union Health ministry has issued advisories educating people how to handle the infection and urging people to not panic.
Scared and frustrated with the outbreak of one virus after another, netizens took to social media to cope and post memes.
