Memes erupt as Angelo Mathews becomes first international cricketer to be timed out
Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews made history in Monday's World Cup clash against Bangladesh, becoming the first international cricketer to be "timed out." The incident occurred in the 25th over when Mathews came to bat after the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama's wicket. However, Mathews faced a delay due to issues with his helmet strap and requested a replacement.
This delay led Bangladesh and their captain, Shakib Al Hasan, to appeal for a "time-out" dismissal. After a discussion with Mathews and the umpires, the on-field officials declared Mathews "Timed Out" in accordance with the rules.
The MCC's rulebook states that after the fall of a wicket or a batter's retirement, the incoming batter must be ready to face the ball within three minutes. Failure to meet this requirement results in a "Timed Out" decision.
At the time of the incident, Sri Lanka's score was 135-4 in the 25th over. Mathews' dismissal was met with mixed reactions, with some, including Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka, expressing concerns about its impact on the spirit of the game. Nonetheless, the decision was made in accordance with the rules, making Mathews the first international cricketer to be dismissed in this manner.
Following Mathews' departure, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva took charge of the Sri Lankan innings, with the team's score at 180 for five in 32.3 overs. The incident generated a heated debate in the cricketing world, with players, commentators, and fans sharing their opinions via memes on the unique dismissal.
