The world’s most expensive vehicle number plate got sold for more than 55 million Dirhams recently at an auction in Dubai’s ‘Most Noblest Numbers’ event. The event was held at the Four Seasons Resort in the Jumeirah region of Dubai.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Initiatives (MBRGI) is the largest non-governmental organisation in the region, in terms of a number of humanitarian aid initiatives. The MBRGI solves various challenges related to economic, social and environmental conditions in the region.
Soon after the auction, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiaties’s Twitter handle shared a post announcing the winning bid “The Most Noble Number charity auction in Dubai has raised AED 97.920 million that will go towards supporting #1BillionMeals endowment. The world’s most expensive vehicle plate number (P7) was sold during the auction for AED 55 million.”
At the start of the bid, the host put up a question to the audience members saying that “sixteen years ago, a world record was set in Abu Dhabi when a number plate was sold for 52.5 million Dirhams, will this evening’s bid break this record?”
The bidding for the vehicle number plate started at 15 million Dirhams on Saturday night and rose to over 30 million Dirhams within a few seconds.
The bid quickly reached 35 million Dirhams and took a brief pause. This was done when Pavel Valerievich Durov, founder and owner of the Telegram app, made the bid.
It then reached the 55 million Dirhams mark. Other VIP number plates and phone numbers were also bid on at this event. In order to raise funds for the largest Ramadan sustainable food aid endowment, the bidding event was held with the title ‘1 Billion Meals Endowment’ campaign. This charity auction included number plates and VIP phone numbers.
The campaign was launched by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to create the largest sustainable food aid endowment fund under the title “1 Billion Meals Endowment”.
