Selena Gomez is coming back to her “Russo family,” this time, not only as Alex Russo, but as a director for ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Final Chapter.’ This will mark Gomez’s directorial debut. The upcoming show will be the third installment of the popular comedy series ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.’

The makers announced on Thursday that the threequel series will wrap its run across Disney Channels, with production set to begin next week, as per Deadline. In a major creative milestone, Selena Gomez will make her directorial debut with the premiere episode of the final installment. Gomez, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is set to reprise her iconic role as Alex Russo in multiple episodes.

The revelation comes after Season 2’s dramatic ending

The announcement follows a dramatic season 2 finale that left fans with significant unresolved storylines. The character Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, regained her erased childhood memories, including the revelation that Alex Russo is her mother.The finale also introduced looming threats from the dark magic realm. Billie's lineage ties her to the former dark wizard Damian Pennwolf, whose presence has yet to be fully explored.

'Wizards of Waverly Place' was created by Todd J. Greenwald and ran for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, with a DCOM in 2009 and a reunion special in 2013. Along with Gomez and Henrie, the show starred Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, and David DeLuise. Both Canals-Barrera and DeLuise have guest-starred on Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, as well as Bill Chott and Sean Whalen, who both appeared in the original.
