Stunning mosaics

Monreale Cathedral houses one of the world's largest indoor mosaics, renowned for its distinctive artistic fusion and grandeur. Covering an area of 6,500 square meters (7,774 square yards), the mosaics depict biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments and were crafted using 2.2 tons of pure gold. (Photo: Reuters)

A prominent feature of the mosaics is the large depiction of 'Christ Pantocrator' located in the semi-dome at the rear of the cathedral. This icon is characteristic of Orthodox Christian art and is also found in the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. (Photo: Reuters)

1.1 million euros restoration project

Due to water damage, the glass tiles of the mosaics required restoration, with regional authorities estimating the project to cost 1.1 million euros ($1.23 million), funded by the European Union. The scaffolding used for the restoration is expected to be fully removed by mid-October, while the new lighting, provided by the Austrian company Zumtobel, is currently undergoing testing and is scheduled for inauguration in late November. Lighting goals

Matteo Cundari, an executive at Zumtobel, said that the primary goal of the restoration project is to highlight the vibrant colors of the mosaics, particularly the prominent golden tones, while ensuring the lighting on other surfaces remains neutral for a balanced visual effect. (Photo: Reuters)

Historical background

Monreale Cathedral was constructed between 1174 and 1189 near Palermo, under the orders of King William II. According to legend, King William II fell asleep beneath a carob tree while hunting in the woods near Monreale. In a dream, the Holy Virgin appeared to him and advised him to build a church at that location. It is also believed that after the tree was removed, a treasure of golden coins was discovered in its roots, which were then used to finance the church's construction. (Photo: Reuters)
